"Right to Work" Laws Promote Wage Theft for Workers

       Joe Brennan

Right to Work is a Scam. It leaves the worker without any protection when the employer steals their wages. Union dues give the worker the tools to fight back when their salaries are not paid. No union representation, and the worker is on his/her own. No wonder business persons love rtw it gives them a license to abuse their employees. What is wage theft, a deceitful  trick.

Wage theft has many forms. It happens when you work and don't get paid.

"I need you to come in early or close out the business tonight" (no mention of extra pay). "Your sick time/vacation time is not covered", (again no pay). "All employees must attend a special meeting", (on their time - no pay for the extra hours). " We are too busy today - no lunch break", (and no pay). "You have to work off the clock" - I'll pay you in cash" (below standardized wage levels). "I don't have any record of your working those hours", (old story - no pay). "I'm raising you to an administrative position"(translated. "That way I will not have to pay you for extra work hours").

Does any of this sound familiar? If so, you have been a victim of Wage Theft. "Right to work" means you have no union to protect your work conditions and the boss can change your hours, change your salary, change your schedule to meets his/her needs. Your only CHOICE (??) is to accept employer demands or suffer the consequences. A sick child, a family emergency, a needed medical appointment, a family death, "sorry, that's not in your contract"."You can leave, just don't come back".

Employers, Investors, and conservative politicians love "right to work". It supports business, but not workers. Unions however, support Worker Rights, a living wage, a safe workplace, secure benefits. "Right to work" means that management gives the worker the "right to work", but only on management's dictated terms. "Right to work" is a scam.
