Louisville Gives McConnell a Home Coming???

                                                                joe brennan

There is a rumor that Mitch McConnell has a home in Louisville. One would never know it because he is hardly ever here. He did however, recently come home to his constituents' cheers (did I say cheers I meant jeers). Few actually got to see him either enter or exit the Marriott. It was a fortress of 30 to 40 uniformed police. There were police surrounding the hotel, police lined up in front of the building some 200 feet from the awaiting crowd. There were police on the roof, three to four with binoculars, police mounted on horseback - three in all. But where was Mitch? What was he afraid of, a group of his constituents holding pieces of paper? Or was it the ideas that were written on that paper?

"We are not paid, but we pay you". "Put country before party". "Don't take away the medical coverage of thousands of Kentuckians". "Please return my phone calls". "We are not losers who go home, we are here to talk, but where are you?" Two thousand lined both sides of the street waiting to greet their Senator, but he was not in a greeting mood. He has "fought" those who are "Waging a War on Coal", but he has done nothing to assist the coal miners or their families combat Black Lung Disease and other chronic ailments. He has done nothing to assure hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians the health insurance they need.

Repeal and Replace existing plans with Health Savings Accounts? How will that help someone who has no money to put in a savings account? Perhaps they can cross state lines and purchase a plan from another state? How much does health insurance cost in Alaska? They could join high risk groups. How long will such groups have finances to meet health needs? They are free to purchase insurance on the open market. Obviously, the Senator has never had to purchase insurance on the open market especially insurance he could not afford.

And so, Senator McConnell snuck out of the Marriott, the same way he had snuck in. Police made sure the local citizenry did not see him, much less speak with him. All they know was that there was a substantial force to protect him, and we would have to pay the bill. So much for the Senator's Home Coming.
